Brigade attends illegal burn - Tempe Estate

A resident drew unneccessary attention yesterday after commencing to burn waste and refuse in his backyard.

The practice, quite common in times gone by is now restricted by law, and cannot be undertaken at anytime within the Queanbeyan City area.

Further compounding the issue, the resident didn't have a permit to burn, which is required by the Rural Fires Act 1997 during a Bush Fire Danger Period (nominally October - April). Residents in Queanbeyan intending to burn should contact their respective fire authority (NSWFB or NSWRFS) prior to lighting up to ensure that they are allowed to do so.

Although the fire posed no threat to surrounding property or vegetation it was still unlawful and can be met with serious penalties including jail time.

Queanbeyan 7B and other local units investigated the area, spoke to the resident and ensured the fire was extinguished.

Additional crew remained on stand-by at the station.
