Intelagard Macaw CAF Backpack

- 19 January 2010 at 21:11

In what is believed to be a first for the New South Wales Rural Fire Service - if not the first for the Australian Wildfire industry, Queanbeyan City Brigade will trial the Intelagard Macaw CAF Backpack. The Brigade will receive the unit this week from the United States and will soon put the new unit through its paces throughout the year.

The Macaw from Intelagard has some impressive statistics such as - multiplies the 18.9L of carried water into as much as 1325L of finished foam. The Macaw can shoot a stream of foam up to 12.2m enabling the user to maintain a safe distance from smoke, flame or heat.

The Macaw will be used by Queanbeyan Brigade when and whereever possible (if safety permits) in such areas as: Fire Suppression, Exposure Protection, Mop-up and Overhaul, Vehicle Fires, Fuel Spills, Spot Fire Containment, Wet Line Construction.

"It's great that Intelagard has jumped on board supporting Queanbeyan City Brigade, we have been looking at better ways of doing the job from the individual fire fighter point of view. Equipment has been improving by leaps and bounds on the big end of town, bringing the focus down, this CAF has the potential to make the individual a more potent fire suppression tool then the Knapsack or the rake hoe ever could.

Working the Macaw into the Brigade response will be fun and a challenge in some areas such as Occupational Health & Safety" - Captain, Queanbeyan City, 19th of Jan.

Any brigade or officer of the RFS is welcome to come trial the CAF at Queanbeyan Station. Any one of the fire community is also welcome to drop us a line.
