Before the Fire | During the Fire | After the Fire | FAQ

Fire - an exothermic oxidising chemical reaction expelling heat and light, sustained by three elements - heat, oxygen and fuel.  This simple chemical reaction is the cause of much heartache and devastation, often compared to the Hurricanes and Earthquakes that other countries experience.

The 2008/9 Fire Season was the most devastating fire season in the history of Australia with hundreds of lives lost and millions of people affected.  As always, Australians banded together to assist where possible, but needless to say, many lives will never be the same.

As a fire fighter, the loss of life due to fire is something that affects us all differently, we join for many reasons - the protection of life and property consistent across all fire fighters.

Fire is initiated in many ways, and some sources suggest that only 10% of fires are the result of natural causes (i.e. lightening).  This leaves the other 90% to man made causes, machinery, smoking, faulty equipment, electrical faults and unfortunately arson. Take some time to assess the risks around your home with some of the handy brochures available on our parent website - http://www.rfs.nsw.gov.au.   If you see anything suspicious that may be related to arson, dont take a chance.  Call Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.

Please take some time to read information available on the Rural Fire Service website and familiarise yourself with your Bush Fire Action Plan.  When the question begs you should already know the answer - will you stay, or will you go?

If you live on an urban fringe, or in an rural area, please take some time to develop a Bush Fire Action Plan.
